Example text

It is not strange, then, that Paul said to the philosophers at Mars' Hill: "Forasmuch, then, as we are the offspring of God, we ought not to think that the Godhead is like unto gold or silver, or stone, graven by art and man's device" (Acts 17:29). The only true representation of God is Christ (John 1:18; Col. 1:15; 2:9; Heb. 1:3), and when unregenerate man makes images to represent his conception of God, he invariably belittles and degrades Him, and the surest way to selfdegradation is to degrade the object of one's worship.

Those who have sinned, then, without the Law, will perish, but not because they rejected or disregarded the Law, for the Law was not given to them. But those who have sinned "in," or under, the Law will be judged by the Law. Thus we read, "there is no respect of persons with God, for as many as have sinned without law shall also perish without law; and as many as have sinned in [or under] the law shall be judged by the law" (Vers. 11,12). AN ARGUMENT FROM LOGIC And now he inserts a parenthesis: Vers.

Dissipate the human frame and destroy it. "Sin, when it is finished, bringeth forth death," entirely apart from the Law. But not only does sin destroy the body; it destroys the soul as well. This is not to deny that God will judge all men, for Ver. 16, Acts 17:31 and other passages clearly indicate that He will. The subject here is the possession or non-possession of the Law of Moses, and the Apostle shows that even without the Law the heathen would perish, and then he goes on to explain on what basis they will be judged.
