The existence and persistence of evil exposes the limitations of the scientific project. Evil resists quantification. It defies expectation. It does not fit neatly within a rational worldview because evil is not rational. ” An increasing number of theologians and philosophers, however, are beginning to question the whole enterprise. They suggest that accepting the problem of evil as classically stated is itself problematic, that seeking a systematic and rational explanation for evil (and suffering) fails to do justice both to the witness of Scripture and to human experience.

A process theodicy takes the limitations on God’s sovereignty to a greater extreme by denying God’s omnipotence altogether. Essentially God does not do away with evil because he cannot. 15 Thus, creation is about God struggling to achieve order out of chaos. 16 A process theodicy does not accept the self-limitation of God that characterizes free-will theodicies, instead viewing the limitation of God’s power as a genuine lack of omnipotence. In essence God is doing the best he can as he continues working to bring order out of chaos.

12 Boesak writes: “People who do not know what oppression and suffering is react strangely to the language of the Bible. The truth is that God is the God of the poor and the oppressed. . Because they are powerless, God will take up their cause and redeem them from oppression and violence. ”13 Both of these readings have value as the symbolic nature of Revelation’s language allows for diversity of interpretation. As I will argue later, one reason John may have chosen to communicate through the apocalyptic genre is because apocalyptic symbolism is capable of speaking both to the comfortable and to the afflicted simultaneously.
